Re: Is anyone on Desogen and how is it working?

Hi Jennifer!

I've been on Desogen for a couple of years. I too, suffer extreme depression. Part of mine is in relation to the fact that I went thru a separation and divorce 3-4 years ago. My ex has remarried and has recently announced he's going to be a daddy again. Yes, it hurts. I also had to make some really tough decisions....the first was to leave a marriage of 16 years where I had been emotionally and verbally abused and it was crossing over to the physical realm. I have no family nearby, and yet HE gets to live near all of his family while I'm prevented from moving outside a 100 mile radius without his permission because of our kids. My parents and sister live 700 miles away and I really miss them. My ex inlaws are a very hateful, vengeful group and I don't miss the contact with them, although I do miss the three neices I no longer see.

Anyway, a lot of women with PCOS experience depression. I do think there is a definite biological/hormonal/chemical link there. First, you've got to deal with the hard facts that you're going to have to work harder than any "normal" person to achieve health and maintain health. You are constantly reminded that you're not like "others".....you have excess hair where women aren't supposed to and yet lesser hair where you want to have hair. You might have acne. You most likely have to fight the weight problem......although if you're one of those who don't, I've heard that the "thinner" cysters have a higher chance of certain health problems usually associated with being overweight. The mirror is a constant reminder.......people are another. If you're not fortunate to have a loving partner who cherishes you for yourself but instead holds these "defects" over your head (AS IF you could DO something about them!!!), then it's no wonder you're depressed.

Many of us have found we "level out" the mood swings and depression by taking prescription medications for depression. I take Prozac, as does my sister. We really can tell the difference.......and my best friend mentioned I seem to be able to think more clearly and reasonably when I'm on the meds. Some women can't tolerate Prozac, so don't feel that's the only med that will work. If you're hesitant to try a prescription med first, you might try St John's Wort, but be SURE your doctor knows and discusses possible side effects you might have if you use other meds with it.

One of the best ways to deal with the depression is to recognize it for what it is.....talk to a trusted friend.....talk to the others on the PCOS lists who also deal with it.....and seek counselling or medical treatment. There is nothing shameful about admitting you need help. You wouldn't try to "get along" with a broken arm would you?

You might want to have a checkup and talk to the doctor about your depression. It might help to keep a diary of what is going on in your life and how you feel each day......if there is any pattern or possibility that the depression stems from outside sources too.

Best wishes!

Hugs,
