Sam,
Thanks for the response. My husband meant not to take anything like
Clomid that could result in multiple births. I wasn't too concerned
about breakthrough bleeding since it takes about 4 days into my "off"
week before I start anyway. I tried to make an apptmt with an RE that
my medical insurance will pay for and there is a 6 month wait. So, I
decided to quit taking my birth control. I have an appointment with my
regular doctor in 2 weeks and I will ask her about Provera and/or
Metformin then.

The most probable consequence of taking them according to any other scheme, whould be break-through bleeding. It is a funny opinion to forbid you to take any infertility drugs, but what is an infertility drug? If you have PCOS, the drug you most probably should take is a type of insulin sensitizer that could also restore your cycle, i.e. your fertility. Now, according to your husband is this an infertility drug? I think it is better to have expert opinion on your condition, do your home (lab) work and take the drugs your Dr considers necessary.
