AvandiaFrom: Susan (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 2 Feb 2001 18:31:56 -0600 (CST)
Hello all, I wanted to share my recent experience with the new medication Avandia (which replaced Rezulin). I was diagnosed with PCOS 2 years ago, and tried taking Metformin (Glucophage) for about 6 months with disappointing results and rather odd side effects. So, I quit taking it. Then in December I switched to a new Endocrinologist who suggested I try Avandia. He said, while it's not FDA approved for PCOS as yet (neither is Metformin I think) tests looked promising for treating the PCOS related insulin resistance. At that point I figured I had nothing to lose and everything to gain, so I gave it a try. Well . . . first of all, I experienced none of the side-effects I'd suffered from with Met (no side-effects at all actually), and I've now had 3 monthly cycles in-a-row. This is almost a record for me. Anyway, I just wanted to let those of you who've had some questions/concerns about the Metformin know that there appears to be a good alternative out there. You would, however, definitely want to speak with your Dr. if you're pregnant. I have no idea if it's bad for pregnancies or not.
