>I was just reading about Actos on their website and they say it often causes weight gain..but I've read several postings saying the opposite..So I'm wondering what people's results have been as far as periods, hair loss/hirsitism (which I have BAD) and weight loss..using a low-carb diet with either met or Actos...<

The benefits of Actos over met are simply that there are no side effects (of the gastrointestinal sort). B/c Actos is metabolised through the liver (not the kidneys like met), you must have a "baseline" hepatic liver function test and then test every 3 mos to make sure there are no abnormalities or changes. I did not gain weight on it, and in fact continue to lose weight at a moderate-to-slow pace. For me, as long as it's coming off, that's fine. I do not low carb (it's dangerous for kidney stone pts--I've had one--OUCH!!), but I limit the amt of food I eat (of any sort) based on when I'm physically hungry (stomach rumbles) and physically full (politely, comfortably full).

>and what your experiences have been like with spiro..do I have to take spiro for good results with actos??<

I am on spironolactone as well as the Actos (30 mg), but I was on spirono with met as well. It stems the effects of the testosterone in your system; I highly recommend it to stave off the hirsutism and hair loss.

If you have other questions, the archives are probably a good place to browse; there's lots of good information that will help you make decisions and talk to your dr in an informed way. Most of all, you need to talk to your RE about your confusion and if s/he doesn't want to explain it to you, FIND ANOTHER DR. This is YOUR health and life we're discussing; it's too important to spend wasted time with a dr who's not interested in helping you cope with this and giving you treatment that will work for you.
