Article- 'Resistin' Scientist discover hormone linking obesity, diabetesFrom: Andrea (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 18 Jan 2001 21:50:26 -0600 (CST)
Wanted to share an news article dated January 18, 2001, Reno Gazette Journal. "Obesity is the largest single risk factor for diabetes, but scientists have not known how those extra pounds interfere with sugar metabloism - until now. Pennsylvania researchers have discovered a new hormone, called resistin, that is released by fat cells that interferes with the activity of insulin, producing type 2 diabetes. The discovery, reported in today's edition of Nature, offers the prospect of more powerful drugs - with fewer side effects- for the treating the disease, which affects more that 1,5 million Americans and more than 100 millon people worldwide. Resistin appears to be at least part of the missng link between obesity and diabetes, according to Dr. Jeffery S. Flier of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston....." Aricle goes on to mention is only studied in rats, but needs to be confirmed in humans. Also they hope to develop drugs that would specifically block or de-activate resistin. It will be interesting to see what they will come up with. Good news!/?
