Re: dry mouthFrom: Zowie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 17 Jan 2001 10:25:42 -0600 (CST)
Hi Jennifer, One thing that bothers me about your post is that you were on Met, and then switched to Spiro. These are 2 totally different drugs---they're not related. Met is to control your insulin sensitivity, Spiro is an anti-androgen to control the high levels of testosterone (to prevent acne, hair loss and hair growths [ex. chin]). Because of their vast differences, I can't see why a doctor would switch you from one to the other---a lot of women with PCOS take BOTH to help with their symptoms, but never are they switched as a substitute for the other. You may want to talk to your Dr. about this. If anything, you can be taking BOTH at the same time if you do have insulin problems and testosterone issues, but they should NEVER be substituted for each other. That's like having a recipe that calls for cornstarch, but instead of using FLOUR, you substitute CHOCOLATE. ???? See my point? As far as the dry mouth and dehydration, I don't remember my BCPs stating that was a side effect, nor do I see that on the Met information. However, the diarrhea sometimes caused by Met can cause dehydration. Your Dr. may need to simply change the dosage on the Met. I haven't had Spiro, so I can't tell you side effects of that--but it should have come with some info. Once you do have dehydration, it's not going to go away quickly, so again, I'm surprised that your Dr. switched your medication, thinking that you'd be fine, when in actuality, that's not going to give you a quick fix. Have you been exerting a lot of energy than normal?? Or have you been drinking less fluids (ex. water, juice, NOT sodas) than before? This could also play a part in your dehydration. There may be something else going on that you don't know about. I've never heard of BCPs or Met causing dehydration (except for the diarrhea issue mentioned above), so I don't think those drugs were the problem. Check about the Spiro to see the side effects. Maybe you need to drink more fluids with that drug--I don't know. But please, talk to your Dr about the Met and Spiro. They are 2 totally different drugs and to think that a Dr. is using them as substitutes for the other really worries me. Good luck, and take care of yourself.
