Re: Please! My 16yr old daughter w/PCO going bald!!!From: Zowie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 16 Jan 2001 15:59:21 -0600 (CST)
Hi Fay, The hair loss is a symptom of PCOS, as is the hair GROWTH on the chin, stomach, etc. (Male pattern). Just because your daughter was DIAGNOSED in August, doesn't mean that's when the PCOS started. I was diagnosed only this past April, but I've had it for at least 10 years. The longer it goes without detection, the worse the symptoms are (usually). Ultimately, your daughter needs more treatment than the Glucophage (also called Metformin). That's only an insulin sensitizer---means it will help her insulin to work better. Also, please don't expect this medication to help her to lose weight, facial hair or acne. That is NOT what it is for. That only appears in SOME women taking the Glucophage---NOT ALL. So before you get yourself more upset, please realize that loss of weight, facial hair and acne MAY occur with the Glucophage, but it also may NOT. There are anti-androgen medications which may help her, such as Spironolactone (Aldactone). This blocks the effects of androgens (including testosterone), which would help to lessen the occurence of the hair growth, acne and hair loss. You can't just stop and revert the symptoms, but you can make them occur slower and less often. If her Endo actually told you to stop the Glucophage without a real reason, switch Dr's. Obviously this person knows little about the medication s/he put your daughter on in the first place---and that worries me. Were there any tests done to determine PCOS or Insulin Resistance problems (hence the need for Glucophage)? I sure hope some were done. A Dr. should never issue Glucophage without testing and a full understanding of the real problem. If your daughter is that upset about the PCOS and symptoms, she may need an anti depressant, which many of us do take. But first, she needs to accept and understand what is really going on with her body. This may ease her pain and help her to cope with the PCOS. It's not curable, and the symptoms will NOT all go away, so she really needs to realize that first. She may have had this for some time before finally being diagnosed. That was the case for me. I would definitely talk to another Dr. and lose this Endo. It is very unprofessional and risky telling you to stop a medication that was prescribed without any real explanation. Get a second opinion right away, and ask about the anti-androgens for the acne, hair loss/growth. The Glucophage isn't meant for that, but Spironolactone is. Together, they may make the perfect combination to help your daughter. But first, you need to talk to the right Dr. Also, there is PLENTY of info. out there on PCOS. Here are some I use.
