Re: Glucophage vs ActosFrom: Kimberly (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 15 Jan 2001 13:59:06 -0600 (CST)
Hi Linda, I have been on Actos for 6 weeks and have great results. I also started on Spiro at the same time in combination with a low carb diet. At my month check up, I had lost 24 lbs and also re-did all my blood tests. The weight loss was great for me, but I was so ecstatic about my lipid panels coming back great. My cholesterol had dropped from 397 to 194, my tri's from 284 to 111 and my LDL had dropped also. My testosterone had dropped. My thyroid was in normal range for the first time in years. I had to laugh at the doctor because I thought he had the wrong test results. I even had the first spontaneous period 11 days after starting on Actos. (this even with stopping BC pills). I cant stress enough about changing my diet and eating patterns though. I know this helped dramatically. Cutting out carbs I thought was going to be a pain..but you know what? I feel so much better now. No more headaches, ups & downs in blood sugar, no more mid-afternoon drag-ass and no more stomach issues. My mother started Glucophage one week before I started Actos. She has had some awful side effects. I know she has lost some weight, but it's because of the horrific bowel problems associated with the medication. That was one point my doctor stated, Actos is the 3rd generation drug for insulin sensitizing. It does not usually have the side effects that Met/Glucophage does. He did say that monitoring liver enzymes and lipid panels was a necessity on Actos. But I dont mind that versus spending excessive time in the ladies room. Let me know if I can give you any more info...Take care, Kimberly
