Re: Glucophage Side Effects

I have read about Glucophage/Metformin (I'm assuming both names are slightly different from each other--as in one is brand name, the other generic?) I've read that they also help with glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity. I guess this is what is helping women with PCOS to lose weight. Are there any other meds out there for us that help with the weight issue? Nothing I try seems to work, and I'm wondering exactly WHAT else is wrong with me. My father is diabetic and I know that kinda adds to my list of "possibilities". However, I think I may be the exact opposite. Along with my anemia and constant bleeding, I get times of serious nausea and weakness--almost to the point of passing out. I actually feel BETTER when I drink something that has a decent amount of sugar. I stay away from soda and drink juice whenever possible (and 1-2% milk). My diet is quite healthy and I don't overeat, although at times, I do go overboard (who doesn't?) From reading up on PCOS I've learned to try and stay away from carbs, but it's just so difficult for us, as the carbs are cheaper and more filling than other foods. Has anyone else experienced this? I can't remember the name of the disorder, all of my bloodwork has always been reported as "normal". My cholesterol is great and they claim my thyroid is fine, but it just doesn't make sense. I usually have a sandwich for lunch, and 2-4 hours later, I'M STARVING sometimes! And I don't work, so I'm always at home---I'm not expending so much energy that I need food. Usually, I'll have an apple, or banana, or something small just to hold over till dinner. Anyone else experience this or know about this weird stuff? Oh, in case anyone is wondering, my appt. today with another "specialist" in GYN was cancelled, so I have to wait another week to be seen. Sorry this is so long, but I just want to be educated on this. Thanks so much for the help.
