Kerry, re: Insulin ResistanceFrom: Joan (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 14 Dec 2000 16:16:37 -0600 (CST)
Kerry, The 2hr IGTT is a much more sensitive test that the fasting insulin glucose test. My fasting tests were pretty much normal but the IR showed up on the 2 hr test, though glucose was still normal. One theory about this is that even women who don't meet the IR criteria may still have ovaries that are extra sensitive to insulin-Since some women who are not 'officially' IR seem to have benefits from Met. that seems like a plausible explanation. I had my first ultrasound 15 years ago when I was initially diagnosed by a reputable RE. I have had other ones for various reasons, including to understand why I was having pain. Frankly, I think they are pretty standard practice diagnostically and I'm suprised your Dr. hasn't suggested one. It doesn't suprise me when Dr.s aren't on the ball relative to IR-but I think that most REs are up on this information. Good luck with your January appointment-I'm sure the care will be better. Keep us posted.
