Re: Black Cohosh Anyone?From: Shelly (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 6 Dec 2000 17:15:27 -0600 (CST)
It's my understanding that Black Cohosh has weak phyto-estrogenic properties like soy or tofu. I'm comming to the conclusion that we pcosers DON'T need anymore real or phyto-estrogen. 1)most of us pack enough adipose tissue (fat) to create all the required E. we need. 2)If a person is going to take BCP to treat the symptoms I would think a progestin only (no E) pill would be best. 3) I've been reading about E's detrimental effects on thyroid function and soy milk's (phyto-estrogen)detrimental effects on infants'thyroids. According to his two books Dr. Lee of natural progesterone fame thinks osteoporosis is caused by a drop in progesterone NOT estrogen. In my very humble opinion I think the only time phyto-estogens even need to be used is to combat things like hot flashes and vaginal dryness. And they should be tried BEFORE starting on synthetic HRT.
