Re: Generic vs Brand Spironolactone

Is the "new" medication called Aldactone? That's another name for Spironolactone. As far as I know, they are the same compounds and do exactly the same thing.....think of it as a choice between K-Mart's aspirin and Wal-Mart's aspirin. They're going to be the same and have the same effects on your system, if they're pure aspirin.

The doctor most likely is doing this to save you money AND your insurance company most likely demands doctors use generics when available.

I've only read (quite some time ago) one article where there was some doubt as to the value given one drug to treat the same thing as another drug. I think it was something to do with heart attack or stroke medication. I also seem to recall it wasn't a case of Brand Name Vs. Generic, but that the lesser expensive treatment was being marketed as a less expensive ALTERNATIVE to the other drug.....however, some of the studies were proving that the lesser expensive drug really didn't work as well as the first, more expensive drug. I seem to recall law suits were being filed over this very thing!

Generics MUST meet the same specifications as the brand names, so don't stress out on the fact that you got generic. It basically means the patent has expired on the brand name and it's open for anyone else to manufacture the same thing.

However, when dealing with insurance companies and their cute (sarcastically said) little "formularies"....the list of "preferred" medications...must be watched by YOU, the consumer. I had my doctor's office call a couple years ago saying the insurance company had called them and wanted to change me to a lesser expensive drug for my acid reflux. They wanted me put on Prilosec instead of staying on Prevacid. These are different drugs, yet they are used to achieve similar results. I made a point to tell the doctor that I REFUSED to be changed....that I had taken Prilosec before and I really think Prevacid was working better for me. They called the insurance company back and kept me on the Prevacid. Still....I'm rattled that guys with business degrees are not only practicing medicine without a license, but they are also practicing medicine WITHOUT SEEING THE PATIENT!!! ONE SIZE DOES NOT FIT ALL!!!!

I recently moved to a new city and a new health plan. I've been on Spirono for 2 years and when I moved the new Dr. switched me to the generic brand. I didn't know until I got it home from the pharmacy. I was wondering if anyone knew if there was any difference or reason I should go back to the brand name version? It would be more $$ now and I'd have to get a new prescription.
