There is some debate about the safety of metformin (Glucophage) in pregnancy. The manufacturer says that it is contraindicated during pregnancy.

Diabetic women on metformin are invariably switched to insulin when they get pregnant, because very tight blood glucose control is necessary to prevent complications. This doesn't mean that metformin is necessarily unsafe. It does mean that it hasn't been studied...it's only recently that this question has come up regarding women who take metformin for PCOS and are not diabetic.

I stayed on metformin for the first 7 weeks of my pregnancy, until we confirmed the heartbeat by ultrasound. I guess I was kind of 'hedging my bets' - I hoped it would provide some protection against miscarriage, and I wasn't certain that I wanted to take it throughout my pregnancy. My baby girl is, so far, healthy.

My personal decision was based on my own research and opinion. If you are thinking about taking metformin during pregnancy, then this is something you should discuss with your health professional(s). Perhaps there is a drug or teratogen information service in your area - if so, your doctor or pharmacist should know the phone number, though they might have to call on your behalf. You might also want to do an internet search, though you have to be careful about your sources.

Sorry I can't give you a simple yes or no on this, but I hope this helps a little.
