Re: Why Metformin first,then Avandia,Actos??From: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 4 Nov 2000 22:29:05 -0600 (CST)
I have been on Met for almost one year now. I also have IBS and experienced horrible bowel problems that I thought would go away, but they only got worse. I actually gave up on it after 8 months and tried Actos for a month. My doctor never said why, but he definitely prefers Met over Actos or Avandia. I agree, Met is much better in controlling my PCOS symptoms than Actos. Anyway, while I was off Met for the month, I read a bulletin board comment from an angel of a person who suggested that the reason most people have trouble with Met is that they are taking too much too quickly. I fit that category. I restarted Met, but began by cutting my 850 mg pills into fourths. I took one-fourth of a pill each day for a week and then added a fourth each week. By the end of the month, I was up to 850 mgs per day with NO bowel problems. I am now at 1000 mgs per day and am doing great. I'm glad I did not give up on it. My advice is to start out very slow and let your body adjust before you move up to a higher dose. Also, not everyone is cut out for the same dose. My doctor thinks that 1000 mgs is enough for me. Good luck.
