Re: BCP's and Hair GrowthFrom: Maggie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 24 Oct 2000 14:54:24 -0500 (CDT)
Hey Robin, Well, I actually got my facial hair when I went off the pill for 1 month 7 years ago. I was told that once the hair growth starts, it won't go away with pills. Your only real option, I believe, is some sort of hair removal system. I tried electrolysis but it was too painful for me (I'm a real wimp) but now am doing laser. I've noticed a sharp decrease in the amount of hair. Not all of it is gone, but I'm starting met soon and I've heard that helps inhibit new hair growth. You see, shaving, waxing, all that leaves the hair follicle, or whatever is in the skin there so it will always grow back. Only laser or electrolysis can actually kill the hair and prevent new hair growth. Also, often, you will have multiple hairs in the same follicle, so, you tweeze it and a week later it is back. It may actually be a totally different hair! That's why most laser people have you come back every 10 weeks for the 2nd or 3rd hair to come in so they can kill that. Now, since we have PCOS, we have a little problem b/c our hormones encourage new growth. So, we kill hairs 1,2 & 3, but suddenly, for the first time, hair #4 shows up. BCP's and Met help prevent new hair growth. So, they can't do anything to get rid of what is already here, but will help stop any new growth. I hope this helps. If you or anyone has questions about laser or electrolysis, please feel free to email me. Take care!
