I have a cast iron stomach and was fortunate not to suffer from the gastrointestinal side effects so many women complain of when they first start. Okay, I had one or two diarrhea episodes but that's about it. Glucophage has been good for me in that it has helped cut my carb cravings and along with exercise and the Zone diet has lowered my insulin, cholesterol and testosterone to low normal ranges. My endo thinks I'm doing great and I guess I am from a diagnostic standpoint - my bloodwork shows that I'm healthier than most people, whether they have PCOS or not. That said, in the past year, I've not lost much weight on the glucophage despite how much I've changed my lifestyle. I only need to lose 25 lbs.(It's a ton for me!) but that weight was only gained in the past 3 years (I've had PCOS for 20 years, symptomatic insulin resistance for 3)and I have a mild case of PCOS so I'm freaked that my weight is not being cooperative. I've got to go to the endo on Tuesday, I need some answers about the weight - with low insulin levels and normal thyroid function, there should be no barriers to significant weight loss, right? Anyway, it seems to me that the people that need to lose the most weight seem to do so on glucophage and alot without much initial effort besides swallowing the pills. I used to frequent this site often when I went on the drug last year and remember reading posts from women with similar weight issues who despite lower carb living and exercising were not seeing any appreciable weight loss on glucophage. However, I got overwhelmed/upset by the degree to which this disease affected alot of women on the discussion boards, stopped visiting and therefore did not keep up to see how glucophage ultimately panned out for the few women with similar PCOS profiles to my own. As for menstrual cycles, again my PCOS is relatively mild. Before glucophage, I was getting my cycle 8 to 10 times a year on my own, which meant I'd skip a month or two without notice. Just recently, I noticed that my body has a 35 day clockwork cycle. Glucophage is a MUCH better way than BCPs to get your cycle back on track. You're actually ovulating and having a period w/ glucophage plus BCPs have been shown to raise your insulin levels and exacerbate insulin resistance. Sorry about being so verbose. In short, yes glucophage is incredibly useful for us PCOSers but I think I've made the greatest progress by combining the drug with a lower carb diet I can live with and exercise. Hope this helps.
