Re: Glucophage... Approved???From: Bronwyn (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 4 Oct 2000 07:39:17 -0500
> What is Glucophage? ***************** Glucophage is the same as Metformin. It's an oral diabetic medication that has been found to work particularly well with PCOS and it's insulin resistance link. Many women with PCOS have also found they lose weight more easily, start to have "regular" periods, lesser excess hair from the excess testosterone we have, stopping of hair loss due to male pattern baldness from PCOS, acne clears up considerably, and the darkened skin along the neck and armpits may lighten up to "normal". It's not without its drawbacks. Metformin tends to have side effects which, from the many lists of PCOS women I'm on, seems to hit a majority of us at least at some point. These mostly include gastro-intestinal distress ranging from minor queasiness to extreme explosive diahhreah and cramping. Some women have been able to wait out these symptoms when they occur in the initial weeks at the start of treatment, while others (like me) only had them increase in both occurance and amount of distress to our lives and bodies. Other side effects seem to include some tiredness and perhaps some signs of sugar imbalance resulting in dizzy spells, lightheadedness, queasy feeling, and some mental confusion. For the most part, from the women I've talked with, these symptoms are usually not severe and can be controlled a bit by being very aware of diet and excersize and how they work with the medication on each woman's individual system. Hope that helps! Hugs, Shelley
