Discouraged with Metformin (Glucophage)--Help!

Hi Ladies, I have been taking metformin since January of 2000, and I am a little discouraged. When I first started on it, I tolerated 1000 mg. a day fairly well. However, I had a blood test that showed my liver enzymes were twice as high as they should be, so my doctor wanted me to get a second opinion. The second doc told me to stop taking it, so we could get some baseline bloodwork done. Because I gained 5 lbs. in the 4 weeks I was off it, and my original doctor's partner wanted me back on it, I began again, but this time at only 500 mg. I tolerate that dose just fine. However, the new doctor said he wants me on 2000 mg. a day!!!! I am having a hard time even going back up to the 1000 mg. a day. Right now, I am taking immodium to prevent having to go to the bathroom a lot, but I feel like I have an upset stomach anyway. I don't know whether to keep plugging away with the metformin, or request a different medication. Maybe I could tolerate the 500 mg. dose of metformin in combination with Avandia, or something like that. Does anyone have any ideas, or what has worked for them? I really want to lose weight and get my PCOS under control. I am also taking Diane 35, and this is a great medication for me--I feel great taking it, but the metformin so far is another story. It just seems like it is taking so long to see any results. Please reply!! Thanks!!! Eileen
