Re: Success on low-dose Met

Hi Kim, I have been taking met since Jan 30, 2000. A regular endocrinologist--not RE--told me to stop taking all meds in June to get some baseline tests done. I did, and I felt better, but I gained 5 lbs. and the hair started coming in dark on my chin. I went back on it, at 500 mg., but I went back to the RE and he says that he wants me to gradually increase my dosage to 2000 mg. a day! That seems like a lot, but I have about 30 lbs. to lose. I have been having some trouble increasing my dose because of side effects, so now I am taking 1000 mg. a day with immodium to prevent that problem. I am not sure yet if I am going to stay on met or not. It seems like it takes some people many months before they see improvement, and I am not willing to be sick for something that just "might" help. But, I also don't think I have been on a high enough dose for long enough to know for sure if it helps me. The reproductive endo doctor told me that some people do have to take 2000 mg. a day--2 pills in the am, and 2 pills at night--to see results. If it does not work after a long enough trial, I may ask about taking Avandia. There are not as many studies on it though. Take care, and feel free to write me. Email address above. Eileen.
