Re: ultrsound diagnosis of pcosFrom: Joan (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 26 Sep 2000 13:37:49 -0500 (CDT)
I hope I can help you. PCOS involves many things other than cysts( a reason it is a syndrome and not a disease) . The cysts are a reflection of the larger problem-hormonal imbalances which in many cases may have a basis in Insulin Resistance. It is importat to women to shed their uterine lining regularly(menstruate) in order to avoid certain cancers. Ovulation is a sign that everthing is in working order. If you ovulate , you will almost always menstruate about 2 weeks later. If you wish to concieve you must ovulate. Most cysts, especially small ones like you have, will eventually go away by themselves. Being on birth control pills can for some women help keep hormones within normal levels and help reduce the number and size of cysts. Regular cysts is a hallmark of the PCOS and unless the underlying problems are addressed you are likely to continue to develop them. At a small size they are not too much of a problem in themselves though they do contribute to the production of excess hormones. Larger cysts can rupture and cause more serious problems. Good Luck
