Re: aldactoneFrom: Sue (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 11 Sep 2000 17:04:10 -0500 (CDT)
>>I went back on the aldactone in april. I was on only 25mg until about a month ago when my dr. upped it to 50mg at my request. My question is: I seem to be experiencing decreased libido and possibly >depression and am starting to wonder if it is the aldactone.<< Aldactone (and the generic spironolactone) lowers the amt of testosterone in your body. Sex drive and other hormones connected to the "well feeling" we often experience are connected to testosterone levels. So it is very common to lose one's libido (although I've found it will eventually come back). I've never been depressed on it, though. Truthfully, though, I don't think I've ever really dealt with "depression" like most people talk about it. I've had "blue" or "sad" times, but I wouldn't classify it as depression. A word about your dosage: that's a very low dosage. I'm on 200 mg/day, and that's pretty standard for reduction of hair growth and retardation of hair loss. You might want to check with your dr on the dose. I will encourage you that if you're not happy with how you're being treated (medically and otherwise), find another dr. I had to go through a couple of Es to find a good RE--one who would take my concerns seriously and was up on his research. Good luck!
