PCOS Study of Metformin and its effect on women with PCOSFrom: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 28 Aug 2000 13:55:04 -0500 (CDT)
To Whom It May Concern, I am writing from the Albert Einstein College Of Medicine in an attempt to reach women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome in or around the Bronx, NY area who would be interested in joining our study regarding the use of Metformin as a treatment for PCO. Metformin is a drug that has been used for decades in patients with Type II Diabetes to help thier bodies be more sensitive to the insulin being produced. There has been much talk now about using this drug in PCO women, as the insulin-glucose axis has been implicated in the mechanism that plays a role in causing PCO. Many physicians are using this drug for their PCO patients and report good results including redeveloping a normal menstrual cycle, decreased hirsutism (excess hair growth), and even pregnancy in women who have been unable to conceive due to the irregularity of their cycle. We are studying metformin to see how it may work in helping women with PCO and are hoping o gain a better understanding of the disease so that we can better treat it. So, if you live in or around the Bronx, NY area, are between 18 and 38 years old, have a history of irregular periods, excess hair growth, and are interested in trying Metformin, give us a call at (718)430-3152 and ask for Barbara.
