Re: able to drink???From: Cindi (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 11 Aug 2000 20:39:51 -0500 (CDT)
A >>We debated this last month, I dont think it's that big of a deal, I just >>graduated college, too, and would skip my nite dose and the next >>morning's dose if i went out that nite. My thoughts are along the same lines with some clarification. I understand that drinking while on the Met, increases your chances of the rare potentially fatal side affect called Lactic Acidosis, which can occur if your kidneys are not fully functioning, and alcohol intake can decrease your liver and kidney function. I had a bad kidney infection a few months back and stopped the Met for a couple of weeks because of this and the endocrinologist said that was exactly what I should have done. Last winter when we went to an all inclusive resort in Mexico, I drank, but just skipped my evening dose of Met and had no problem. But its a little more complicated than it looks on the surface, because alcohol also has the potential to LOWER your blood sugar and so you could actually have a spell of low blood sugar even if you are insulin resistant. And please at least be aware of the danger of Lactic Acidosis. It is always on your Rx insert with the Met/Glucophage. Cindi
