>>I am curious, how long were you on the 1500mg? Was it because you upped the dose to 2000mg that you developed lactic acidosis or would you have developed it eventually on the 1500mg dosage?<<

Monica-- we feel pretty certain (my husband, my RE, and me) that the lactic acidosis came about in me because of the upped dosage. I had been on 1500mg for more than a year without incident, and when I mentioned to him that I had a few friends on 2000mg (anecdotal stuff), he was amenable to letting me try it, if only to urge my body to ovulate (we *were* going to try to get pg this summer). The symptoms were typical of l.a., but I wasn't aware enough of what to look for: the brochure with the drug and the PDR state that intense muscle pain (sharp pain) and shortness of breath are markers for l.a. I didn't have any muscle pain, but I was exceedingly short of breath just doing little things around the house. Based on my medical history, though, we thought it was bronchitis or pneumonia and treated it for a few weeks with antibiotics. The shortness of breath came on 2 weeks after we increased to 2000mg, which is typical as well. The key is that no one thought to ask if my dosages had changed (the PCP had a list of what I was on for PCO), and I never thought to volunteer the information. If they had or I had, we could've caught it much earlier and prevented the majority of damage to my body.

When you increase dosages, just pay attention to how you feel and make sure if there are any changes you notify your RE. My friends who take 2000mg have not had any problems, so I guess their IR is worse than mine. Just keep tabs on stuff and you'll do fine. : )

I am recouperating slowly (to be expected after all the complications), but more than anything, am just grateful to be alive. Thanks for your well-wishes.
