>>We can get lactic acidosis if we don't drink enough liquids, and shut ou[r] kidneys down.<<

I'm not sure where you got this information, but it is not correct. Trust me, I know. I am recovering from lactic acidosis and an 18-day hospital stay. It has NOTHING to do with how much liquids we drink.

I was getting too much met (had just upped the dosage to 2000 mg/day from 1500 mg a month prior), and had a BAD REACTION.

PLEASE DON'T PANIC--THIS IS *EXTREMELY RARE*! I was one of the 1 in *33,000* people who have this reaction, and my liver has always been healthy. I was eating what I normally ate (not very much), and drinking what I normally drank (quite a bit, usually water). The kidneys and lungs are what try to filter out the excess acid in the system, and by the time we figured out what was going on with me (that I didn't have bronchitis or pneumonia, like we thought), I was in severe acidosis.

Just keep on top of how you feel, and if you're nervous, have your RE take blood and test for liver problems. I am slowly making it back, but the complications I suffered from this have left me off of met (forever) and bcps as well. For me a it will be a slow road back, but more than anything, I've kept quiet about this up till now because I don't want to scare people.

If you're concerned about alcohol and met, TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR. S/he can do blood tests to calm your nerves and you can discuss your habits at that time. Personally, even when I was on met, as much as I enjoyed an occasional glass of wine, it was more important to me to be healthy (through this treatment) than to drink every so often. It may just be that a change of priorities is necessary.
