Donna: I "educated" my general doctor this year. In january, after gaining 15 more pounds in 3 months, I started researching the internet. I had been diagnosed with PCO, but was told that it was caused by obesity and to stay on birth control to fix it. Well, that wasn't going to cut it. So i printed out anything I could find on PCO, and the new insulin treatment for it, and took it to my doctor. It really helps that she is an overweigt female herself, and understands that obesity is not always caused by overeating. So she asked me what i would like to do, and I said I would like to be tested for insulin resistance (my test results showed that i was insulin resistant)and try glucophage, and so I have been on it since March. Lost 12 lbs so far, and all my cysts are gone. Not bad. My gyno is still not really happy that I am on it for non-fertility reasons, but next time I visit her I am going to try to convince her that this is not strictly a fertility issue, it is a quality of life issue. So my educating mission is not yet over. Personally, after having really bad experiences with male doctors, especially concerning my unexplained weight gain ("you just must be lazy and eat all the time"), I will only visit female doctors. I am lucky to be living in a metropolitan area that has a wide choice of female doctors. So, my advice is to not back down, and keep switching doctors until you find one who will listen to you. I am so much happier now that I am on the glucophage and that my doctor is understanding. it is worth the hassle. Good luck!
