Avandia and Weight GainFrom: Cindi (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 25 Jul 2000 12:56:59 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Is there anyone here who has been on Avandia more than a few months? I have been on it for almost 9 months now along with Metformin/Glucophage. I was on Rezulin Glucophage combo until last fall. The Avandia seems to working for my insulin resistance as evidenced by increased sugar control, but I have gained over 20 pounds since I started it. I also have not had a period in the 2 1/2 years since I have been taking the meds, except for once when I took provera. I was already 150 pounds overweight, but had been pretty stable for last 5-7 years, and now this extra gain, its pretty depressing. I had seen where some people gained 8-10 pounds the first year on Avandia, but Dr tried to convince me that it was just water weight and gave me water pills to take along with it, but it didn't really help. I feel like for some reason it is slowing down my metabolism or something. Has anyone else had this kind of response? By the way I have seen many posts asking about whether to take either Metformin/Glucophage or Avandia or Actos. I would like to mention that there are very different drug actions between the Met and the Avandia/Actos type drugs. The Avandia/Actos type like Rezulin formerly, are activating insulin receptors to make the insulin more readily used up. The metformin for one thing, slows down your liver from converting more sugar from stored fats. So many people who have passed the insulin resistance stage and are now Type II diabetics will have to take both. Sorry for so long a post. Cindi
