Shanda, Yes, the latest research is showing that the problem begins with insulin resistance. Glucophage(metformin) is one of the ways to treat the insulin resistance. There are other drugs available such as Avandia and Actos but I don't know how they work. I do know that glucophage helps your body use the insulin that is produced so there is less floating around in your blood. If you haven't already, go to http://www.pcosupport.com. They will have a lot of helpful information and things you can print and take to your doctor as well. As far as finding a doctor who is open to this? Some have had success with reproductive endocrinologists, others with regular endocrinologists, and still others have gotten their GYN to prescribe it. Post a message with your location (town, state) and maybe there's someone on the list who is from around you that can help with finding a good doctor.

Hope this helps. Also, a low carb diet along with glucophage (or one of the others) seems to be a good way for us PCOS'ers to lose extra weight. It's not easy but a little more attainable for most. Good luck.

Polly
