Gayle... Ketones appear in the urine when your body is using stored fat for energy. You can test your urine for ketone levels with numerous "sticks" which you either place in a cup of urine or pass through the urine stream. Depending on what the stick shows will tell you whether or not you are in ketosis. I have always used Ketostix which I purchase at the WalMart pharmacy. The Ketostix turn a pink or purple when there are ketones in the urine. As far as I know, you can test your levels at any time...I got into the habit of testing them after work...before dinner. Unfortunately, I am one of those people who have an extremely difficult time getting into ketosis However, I have managed to get into slight levels with the help of L-Carnitine. Good Luck!! :-) Alexis
