Longtime Met. user, just now having horrible effects

I do not understand why my body is rejecting the Metformin all of the sudden.

I started with 500 mg back in December of '98. In June of '99 I increased doseage to 1000 mg, and back in February of this year I increased to 1500 mg.

When I started at 500 I had absolutely no problems. 1000 brought a little discomfort but it calmed down within a couple months. 1500 was a little rougher, but I was handling it okay.

However, within the last 2 months I have not been able to tolerate it at all. I had 2 episodes where I had to be hospitalized for acute gastritis and the second time I was off the Met. for a week and then when I went to start back at 500 mg, the diarrhea, nausea, and cramps were as bad as the worst of 1500 mg.

The less carbs I eat the worse it gets too.

I talked to my doctor after this last bout of gastritis and he had me start back at 500 a day, but it is so bad I am about to call him and ask what I can do.

Has anybody else all of the sudden not been able to deal with the metformin even after longtime use?
