Re: Metaformin and alcohol?From: Holly (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 19 Jun 2000 11:42:40 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Ladies: I just finished my second week on metformim, beginning with the 500mg , then 1000mg, now 850mg twice a day. I have been trying to follow no-sugar and no-carbs, and have only had a couple drinks in the past 2 weeks. So far I have lost 3 1/2 lbs. My doc told me drinking was ok, lactic acidosis was rare... if ever, and that the side effect percentages were conducted on diabetic patients, not healthy PCOS patients. (he is a specialist) HOWEVER, alcohol is empty calories and does indeed add to the sugar intake! I have found it easier if I do not have anything to drink during the week and limit myself to wine or a cocktail with my evening meal on the weekend. FOR A WINE COLLECTOR, this is tough!! But, I do feel better when I dont have a drink. I have been drinking in excess of a gallon of water a day, and find that more water reduces the effects of the wine... which are more pronounced on the metformim.
