Hyperinsulinemia/PCOS what I know about it and the tests to doFrom: Michele (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 16 Jun 2000 11:29:35 -0500 (CDT)
Hyperinulinemia is the medical term for insulin resistance. To test for it you have to have a "Fasting Insulin" test done. Some recommend, if you can get your doc to do it a glucose tolerance test which also measures your insulin. The normal level for insulin in women is 25 or less. Anything over that is considered hyperinsulinemia. Mine is 56. insulin and glucose are measured differently. You can have normal (fasting glucose test) glucose and abnormal insulin. Which is what I have. Normal glucose just means that your pancreas is still producing enough insulin to process your glucose. When the glucose starts to elevate it means that your pancreas is starting fail in spite increasing levels of insulin. The insulin can not get into the cells to process the glucose. IF YOU DO NOT TREAT HYPERINSULINEMIA YOU WILL NOT GET BETTER AND COULD EVENTUALLY DEVELOP DIABETES AND HEART DISEASE. DON'T TAKE KNOW FOR AN ANSWER GET THE CORRECT TEST DONE AND IF THEY ARE POSITIVE. METFORMIN/GLUCOPHAGE LOOKS LIKE THE BEST WAY TO TREAT IT. also if you lh is higher then your fsh, this is sign that you might have PCOS, you also need to have your male hormones tested. Hope this helps!
