Re: HELP - Anyone else out there been on Met more than 6 mos. with no positive results? From: Maggie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 10 Jun 2000 22:13:30 -0500 (CDT)
Dear Kathy, I was taken off Met due to pregnancy, but I was on it for about 9 months. I did have good results. I'm wondering, what are you doing to promote weight loss? A common misconception about Met is that taking it will magically make the weight come off and that's not true. Weight loss on Met happens because our bodies are helped to function like normal bodies and therefore, we can lose weight as normal people do - by exercising and eating right (which has previously not worked for us, so we don't think it will now). I found that I did not drop any weight just being on the Met, but when I tried exercise - about an hour three times a week (walking-moderate pace) and stuck to eating a much higher amount of fruits and vegetables than I had been eating (thus squeezing out room for junk), I lost 15 pounds in 45 days - which is a very healthy weight loss. Also, about your nausea: are you following a low-carb diet at all? Many women I've spoken to CANNOT tolerate a low-carb diet while on the Met. The reason, it is speculated, is because the Met influences even blood sugar and so does low-carbing - therefore giving you a tremendous case of periodic low blood sugar and insulin insanity - whose MAIN side effect is nausea and feeling bad. You may notice that you feel the worst after not having eaten in too long - or this may show up in you with an intensely satisfying sugar binge (which would right your sugar levels for awhile). I noticed that in myself. I hope this sheds some light on things...Sincerely, Maggie Scheel
