Maire:

First and foremost, Met is not a weight-loss solution for women with PCOS. I will admit, the potential for weight loss is what really excited me about Met when I first heard of it, and for me regular periods were not a priority... However, since I have been on it and since I have learned sooo much about this disease, I have come to realize that the most important function of Met is helping our bodies to become regular/normal again, since we can suffer so many negative health effects if we do not take care of that (high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, infertility..the list is sooooo long). The cosmetic issues are huge, too, but I wanted to emphasize the other issues to let you know that, even if Met is not helping you lose weight the way you had hoped, do not give it up, since it has already started helping you in the most important way of all.. getting you to ovulate normally. Also, you might be surprised that, over time, Met works to reduce unwanted hair growth/loss & some other cosmetic symptoms of PCOS, and many of us who do not lose lots of weight initially actually experience a very slow, steady loss over time (which of course adds up & is a healthy way to lose, putting less stress on your system). Met theoretically makes weight loss easier for many of us, so maybe it is just a question of reassessing your carb intake and your exercise plan (not what you wanted to hear, I am sure). But that was the case with me, and it has begun working slowly and steadily. I used to walk a lot, now I do an aerobic routine in addition to that and it has made all the difference in the world. I used to reduce carbs, but still eat a little potato or bread, but once I cut them out completely, I started to see a difference.

If you are ovulating, a higher dosage of met is not necessary; also, there is no guarantee that upping the dosage will result in weight loss. Those of us who take higher dosages do so because our bodies would not ovulate at the lower dosage....

I probably have not helped much, but I hope I have provoked some thoughts...

Hi I have been taking metaformin now for over 4 months..I was expecting great things, but that was due to my own expectations. Dont get me wrong I am not really complaining. I still have not lost weight despite being a keep fit fanatic and having a fairly healthy diet, which at times lapses on to the occasional choc bar. I am on 1500mg a day now and was wondering if it would be wise to seek advice in uping my dose just to get rid of some of my weight ..does it help? I am now having aregular menstrual cycle ....which is great..but beleive it or not was not my prime concern....I really wanted to fight the cosmetic side effects of this disease......I am currently getting help from a dermatologist in seeking treatment for facial hair..I have such a good doctor....They do exist!!! But i still cant loose those pounds..Any help would be gladly recieved. Thank you! Dont give up .
