Insulin levels and Metformin

I was just diagnosed with PCOS. I am not trying to concieve but am concerned with the weight gain and consequent problems e.g. diabetes. I exercise for minimum for 30-45 minutes 5x a week and have been able to curb the gain, but acheived no loss. My endocryn. prescribed me Metformin, 1500 mg. He said my glucose was normal but my insulin was 3X the average. I'm not sure exactly what that means. Does this seem like a very high level on insulin?

He didn't advocate a full-fledge low carb-diet. But he did say to avoid sweets. Can I expect to loose weight this way?

Thanks a bunch. Melissa
