Re: Is anyone on the INS-1/10 study? (D-chiro-inositol)From: Celeste (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 17 May 2000 15:40:23 -0500 (CDT)
Vikki, Dr. David Portman at Mt. Carmel East is a gynecologist who also does research studies on women's health. D-chiro-inositol is a new medication just for PCOS that is undergoing clinical trials to gain FDA approval. Its brand name will be INS-1. Dr. Nestler at Virginia Commonwealth University has developed it. It is a drug that is supposed to go back a step further in the whole process of our insulin being too high, to address the pathway that caused it to go too high. He found out that we excrete this precursor of an important B-vitamin in our urine at 5 times the rate of normal people, and that a shortage of it causes our metabolisms to make more insulin for some reason. This is not a vitamin treatment, and it is not a vitamin you can buy. It is something found in foods, but our bodies get rid of it faster than we can take it in in the form of food. Anyhow, I learned today that the June study is going to be delayed 2 weeks until the middle of June, so if you have questions call the office at (614) 861-6707 and talk to Lee. She can tell you if you fit the profile they need for the study. It could take several years for the drug to be approved and on the market, and this is a way to see if it will help you. There may be a way for those of us who go through the trials to keep taking it afterwards, but I don't have all the details on that yet. I'm 38 and neither Met or Clomid did a thing for me, so I feel I have to keep trying. My endo doesn't want to put me on Avandia due to the potential for weight gain. Good luck, and chat with me on email if you want to chat about PCOS in Columbus.
