Hi, I went to my first appointment with Dr. Jackson Wu at UCLA today. I had to wait a long time in the reception area (I am told that is typical, oh well), then I was interviewed by a female Doctor (perhaps a resident(?), she was obviously under Doctor Wu). She asked me general questions about my periods, pregnancies and why I was there. I discussed the symptoms I have (very irregular and infrequent menstration, facial hair, hair from my navel down, and coarse hair on my thighs, and the skin tabs. She acknowledged that those were all symptoms of PCOS, and took a lot of notes. She then asked me to wait a few more minutes in an exam room, and then I was ushered into Dr. Wu's office where the two had been discussing my file (along with others(?) it was a very busy place. When Dr. Wu came in, he asked me if I planned any more children (no, three is fine, thank you!!!) and why the facial hair and other issues, beyond the obvious lack of periods were suddenly bothering me, as it was obviously a problem I'd had for a while. I explained how I had only recently become aware how so many of my problems were related to PCOS and that insulin resistance played a role. I told him that I was actually excited to learn that some of the things that I had chocked up to my heritage (I'm part Portugese), were actually part of a disease, and that I might actually be able to do something about it. He told me that depending on MY goals, and the results of my blood work, he could either just give me something each month for periods (I assume provera), or he could put me on birth control pills, or on met or a combination. He also mentioned something about water pills, which I hadn't read about in connection with PCOS before. After the short consultation with Dr. Wu, he wrote up orders for extensive blood tests, which I was able to have done right there at UCLA (a long wait for the lab, its a huge place). My next step is to see him again on the 31st to discuss the results of the blood work and to have an ultasound to check for cysts on my ovaries. At that appointment I think we'll be making decisions on meds.

I hope this report of my experience as a new PCOS patient helps others, I'll let you know more as I progress.

I am Jennifer in O.C. I was wondering how it went with Dr. Wu? I can not find anyone in S. Cal to help with diagnosing me with this. My own Dr. Laughed at me when I brought it up.
