B/C concerns with weight gain?? Don't know where to go from here. From: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 1 May 2000 16:57:05 -0500 (CDT)
I'm 25yrs old, I was just diagnosed with PCOS about 2mos ago. I'm soooo frustrated right now, I don't know where to turn. I have quite a few questions I'm hoping ANYONE can help me with because I don't seem to be getting answers any where else. My obgyn just prescribed ortho tri-cyclen for me to regulate my periods. I was on Depo Provera for about 4yrs. This is before my diagnosis. I had the worst time EVER on Depo & swore after I got off of it I would never do that again. I gained about 70+ lbs., had acne probs & severe headaches & mood swings. It was horible! Two yrs. later I finally have lost most of that weight but was over weight to begin with so I still have about 50lbs to go. The past 2yrs have been an up hill battle for me losing weight. The Dr. said it is harder for someone w/PCOS to lose weight because I produce too much insulin. I have heard birth control causes some women to gain weight. When I expressed my concern of weight gain to my Dr. because of my previous experience with Depo, I was told just not to give into the cravings birth control may cause!!! If that wasn't a problem, I doubt I'd be were I am today! Anyone out there who has had good experiences with Ortho Tri-Cyclen & what can I expect as far as weight gain? I feel as if this is making things worse. I was told by my Dr. that weight gain would make my symptoms worse. Then why is he handing me something that can possibly cause weight gain especially knowing my past experiences. Also, I have hirsutism that I have been going to electrolsis almost on a weekly basis for about 2yrs now. I'm getting SICK of that. Not to mention the pain & costs involved with it. When I asked my Dr. about that he said he didn't want to put me on too many meds at once & that the birth control MAY lessen the regrowth a little. AKA don't be concerned with it. I AM concerned & it makes me self conscience. Anyone taking anything that is helping with that? I am trying to find as much info as I can. As you can tell by my long letter I am VERY frustrated because I feel as if I'm not getting anywhere with this. Any suggestions or personal expreiences would be greatly appreciated.
