re met, bcp & spiroFrom: Eileen (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 29 Apr 2000 11:35:32 -0500 (CDT)
Hi, I was diagnosed Dec. 98 with PCOS. I have always had my period, but had symptoms of weight gain and chin hair. The MD gave me Ortho-Novum 777 for a year, and I saw no change in symptoms; he also did not want to try another medication. So, I went to a reproductive endo, highly recommended. He tested me for many hormones: LH, FSH, estradiol, prolactin, TSH, T4, DHEA, Testosterone, 17OH, etc. The only thing that really came back abnormal was a high DHEA level, and when retested, it was lower. The problem is that I still have too much facial hair, and I do not feel my best. I have been on Met now for 3 months, and I think it may be helping some, but I have not lost any weight to speak of. Now, the doctor wants me to take: spironolactone, 100 mg., metformin 1500 mg., and Demulen 1/35. Does anyone know if this combination will work, and lower the DHEA and facial hair? Also, is it true that birth control pills "protect" your fertility? (I don't have children, but would like to). If I don't eventually lose weight on the metformin, is there another related medication that might help me lose weight? ANY info or personal experiences given would be much appreciated. Thanks! Eileen. . .
