Hi:
I too was told to not yet go on avandia since it could cause weight
gain. I can tell you that increasing your dosage of met extremely
slowly does work, though it does take patience. I took several months
to build up to 1500mg. Cut the pills in half and take them many times a
day if you have to, over long periods of time and you will adjust to it.
Unfortunately, the docs think that raising the met up to its maximum
dosage is the answer, but I don't think that met is the cure all for
everyone--me included.

>>Hi Micha, I'm back from my endo's appt. today. I didn't get the Avandia because the doc wants me to start Met over at very small doses and see if I tolerate it better and have a response. This makes no sense to me and I believe he is only doing this because of my weight. I have to wonder if he is also less comfortable with anything else because it is so new and requires liver monitoring for the first year. I see it as a certain amount of CYA also. He is concerned that I will gain 8-12 lbs on Avandia and while that would be no fun, it wouldn't be the end of the world if it DID happen. So I have a fresh prescription for bcps to try to level things out again hormonally, and I am pretty sure there isn't any hope for me and my metabolism. At least he didn't ask me if I had been eating nothing but corned beef sandwiches all day. :o&
