Re: AMY: Re: Sounds like I'm backwards compared to everyoneFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netWed, 12 Apr 2000 09:21:49 -0500
I wanted to share my experience with antidepressants and that they don't really fix the problem. I was only diagnosed (by a doctor anyway) a couple months ago, and I don't know that she diagnosed me, more agreed with my diagnosis (?). She put me on birth control pills, but after two months I'm not sure I believe this is the answer either. Anyway, I was diagnosed with Depression when I was 18 and soon after given Prozac. As things progressed my depression became worse and my dose was increased. The Prozac didn't work anymore and the doctor I was seeing didn't have knowledge of other antidepressants and suggested I see someone more "experienced". To condense the story somewhat: I am 29 and turning 30 this year, I have been to approx. 10 therapists/doctors/psychiatrists and 15 or more different variations of antidepressants. The antidepressants always worked in the beginning, then 6-12 months along they wouldn't work as well and doctors would increase them, add something else or switch. My current therapist always believed my problem was hormonal based and that is why the antidepressants didn't fix the problem. I guess my main comment is, now that I know I have PCOS, that the treatment should be for the "problem" not the symptoms. It seems like a lot of posts and doctors suggestions are to fix the symptoms and not the problem (such as: weight, excess hair, emotions, periods, etc.). I even think, personally, after two months of bcp that this is only treating my period issue and not the real problem. I have also recognized, some things have improved on the bcp and others have either worsened or become more noticeable. Because of the depth of my depression, I couldn't see or feel various symptoms that I am now experiencing (joint/muscle aches, sweats, etc.). My worst case of depression led me to attempt suicide, which I now know is not the answer. I just wanted to share my thoughts and experiences in the hopes of helping others. I don't have symptoms to the extent of various posts I have read, but I can empathize and it sickens me more that doctors don't listen!!!!! I know this may have also been covered earlier, but if anyone has any suggestions or comments as to if bcp's actually help PCOS at all and on what level I would appreciate it. Sorry the message is so long. Thank you again for all your support and for sharing your experiences/knowledge with me. Laura P.S. I am still on antidepressants, until I can find a RE that I want to see and can get an appointment with to solve the main problem.
