Met Side Affects--Help!

After a lifetime of tests and MDs and 2 years of unsuccessful infertility treatments, I'm finally diagnosed with PCOS.

Now my IF/Endo MD has started me on Metformin (500mg). This is my first week with the RX and I have had horrific stomach pains, gas pressure pains (all the way in my chest) and various other gastric problems.

As with the PCOS, I researched the RX extensively and I know these are all common side affects. My questions:

1--How long before they subside?

2--Are there any tricks (ie certain foods to eat or avoid) to lessen the gastric problems?

3--What warning signs should I be on the look out for (ie, if the pain gets severe or last more than a week?) before I call my MD?

4--ARe there other alternative RX other than Rezulin, if I cannot tolerate?

Thanks.
