Metformin vs. Rezulin/Actos/Avandia

I am recently diagnosed and have started seeing an Endo that specializes in diabetes and PCOS. He's great and full of info, but since I'm between visits I thought I throw this out to you guys. He favors the rezulin/actos type drugs over metformin. In his opinion, (and I quote) metformin "takes the long way around" to work on the problem. I am not against taking the Actos type drugs and he will carefully monitor liver enzymes, but I'm curious about the differences in how the drugs work.

Also, we plan on ttc within about 6 months to a year...after I get more back to normal. Do ya'll have opinions about taking either of these types of drugs during pregnancy?

Thanks in advance!
