If you're going to have high-carb items (not vegetables etc) like sugary drinks (antyhing but water and unsweetened iced tea, etc), breads, pastas, candy bars, cookies, etc, then you should try to make them count for fiber--eat things like whole grains, oatmeal, etc.. try to avoid processed sugars if you are to have sugar (brown sugar or natural sugar is better)

it might help you to pick up a book on a diabetic eating/lifestyle.. you can find a bunch of those types of books on amazon.com with reviews, which will help you select something locally if you prefer.
