I have just discovered after 10 years that the PCOS I was diagnosed with was not just about pregnancy, and infertility. I have developed high blood pressure, hardening of the arteries, am pre-diabetic, and weigh 15 stone. I went on the Atkins diet 4 months ago, and even sticking to it strictly only lost 6 pounds. So i went on the internet , and discovered that there is an underlying problem with most women with PCOS , and that is insulin resistance./insulin is a fat producing hormone, which in PCOS women is produced in excess. So what your body doesn't use converting sugar to energy , it stores as fat. So then i realised that i must have severe insulin resistance as the diet was not working , and checking my urine for ketones every day which you do on the Atkins diet , i realised that my insulin levels were stopping the process. my GP has today realised that all these terrible things that are happening to me is all to do with the PCOS, and has prescribed Metformin, which will help my body to use the insulin better, and thus lose weight. it will also help my blood pressure, although the hardening of the arteries cannot be reversed. I would say to all women with PCOS that it is not only about weight, hair loss, infertility etc , but more importantly, that without the correct diaagnosis and treatment, you run the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes.
