I didn't get my PCOS diagnosis until after I had lost a significant amount of weight. If you want a very healthy, non-medicated real alternative...I may have the answer for some. Bear in mind that this is not for everybody. First...I started out at about 400 pounds. Big tummy, arm hair, hair on my face and neck and all that charming stuff. I was a practicing ovo-lacto vegetarian (yes, there are fat vegetarians). I have not eaten meat since 1990. So I already had a leg up on the nutrition part...I just had to fine tune it. I became a vegan...no animal products at all. I have a lot of soy in my diet, which my endocrinologist said helped my body tremendously. But the thing that has really done it for me has been a lot of exercise. And not just walking casually with a buddy. That might get my mildly out of shape friend where she wants to be, but when you're PCOS, the sad truth is that you gotta sweat yer ass off. I started strength training...don't worry, lifting weights won't make you bigger...Those women work out many many many hard hours in the gym with the intent of bulking up. I started lifting weights to strngthen my body and burn more fat. I started out with exercises that I could do in my home. Later, I hit the gym. After a month or so, I started incorporating aerobic activity. I lifted light weight with high reps and usually did an hour or so of cardio a day. Stairmaster is my best friend. I also picked a hill in a remote area of our town and started running up the hill and walking back down as many times as I could. I taught an aerobics class (at 300 pounds) that people flocked to. I hit a big plateau and went to an endocrinoligist. She prescribed Glucophage, which made me sick and made me gain some weight back. I got rid of the meds and have gone back to what works for me. I took the money I would have spent on stupid stuff and bought a stairmaster (on e-bay) for my home. Honestly, we can all so it. It's just finding what is right for you. My formula is a healthy vegan lifestyle and exercise. I can only benefit from those 2 things. Sorry for rambling. Have a good day janie
