Hello Danielle,

PCOS is something that is believed we carry in our genes. It is a syndrome that tends to manifest at puberty, even though we may not notice any signs of it for many years. It is also associated with insulin insensitivity, meaning if you eat a lot of carbohydrates, it will aggravate many of the symptoms. If you are binge eating, it could be that your blood sugar levels are crashing and your body is telling you to eat, quickly. Usually the body will crave carbohydrates if the blood sugar levels get to low, as they are the easiest to form into blood sugar. Unfortunately, it also is the easiest way to crash blood sugar levels, starting the cycle over again.

There are some supplements which you can take to help ease this, although I can't recall what they are off the top of my head. Something that helped me when I was trying to get a handle on this was eating protein with every meal, and cutting WAY down on the carbs, especially at breakfast. Most of my carbs now come from fruits and vegetables. I eat very little grain products anymore, as I've learned my body just reacts badly when I do indulge.

Everyone reacts a bit differently with PCOS. Some stay skinny, some gain a little weight, many of us gain a lot. Exercise and cutting carbs, seems to help keep it under control. Some women find medication (such as glucophage) also helps, although it did nothing for me but make me ill. Losing weight, even only a few pounds, will often bring the periods back.
