weight gain before or AFTER diagnosis

hello i have been very thin (underweight even) for a couple of years. suddenly in july i started gaining a little weight and stopped having my periods. i was recently diagnosed with PCOS but am very confused. i've had two doctors tell me that just because i have PCOS does not mean that NOW i am going to start gaining weight, but i've started binge eating and also noticed lots of weight gain around my stomach. also, i've read on websites that it IS common to gain weight after getting PCOS. or have i had PCOS all along? i'm just very confused and afraid that i am going to rapidly start gaining a lot of weight. is this true? what are others' experiences with this?

thanks, danielle
