Have PCOS. Continue Taking Birth Control?From: Ann (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 3 Mar 2003 07:41:04 -0600 (CST)
I was dx with PCOS seven years ago and have been on low-dose birth control pills since then (I'm 39). I also take 1000 mg Metformin and 300 mg Welbutrin daily for the last two years. Initially, the Metformin caused some weight loss and over the last two years that 20 lbs. has reappeared (I'm 185 lbs.). Although BCPs keep my periods regular and hormones levels in check, according to Dr. Atkins' book hormones interfere with losing weight. I've just started the Induction Phase of the Atkins diet and to speed up weight loss, I've taken myself off BCP. (Pregnancy/fertility is not a concern.) I'm hoping the Welbutrin (not a SSRI and per Dr. Atkins shouldn't interfere with weight loss) will help with the mood swings. Anyone here with PCOS quit taking BCP and have success on low-carb diet?
-- Thank you, Ann
