am dealing with PCOS successfully!

Hello Melissa: I'm thirty eight and I have had symptoms of PCO since I was around 23 yrs. old. My symptoms were: hirsutism, weight gain around the middle, difficulty in losing weight, insulin resistant, and irregular periods, thank God, my skin has not been affected.

Doctors were much in the dark about this syndrome in the past. FOrtunately, that seems to be changing now. I feel that I have already seen the light at the end of the tunnel.

I have been on Metformin (500 mg. once a day) for many years now. The only symptom it assuaged is irregular period, I went from no-period at all to a 6-week cycle on Metformin (but still not ovulating). Before MEtformin, my period had to be induced by taking provera, which just made me put on weight.

Last November, I started taking supplements as advised by COllete Harris in her book the PCOS Dietbook. You should get a copy of the book so you would know what lifestyle changes you need to undertake, i.e. cutting carb, avoid anything with white flour, etc.

Here is the list of supplements I am taking: flaxeed oil, coenzyme Q-10, vit E, Calcium, magnesium, zinc, Vit B-complex, salmon oil, milk thistle, cranberry tablet. Also, my doctor increased my dosage of Metformin to 500 mg. twice a day from once a day.

Again, I started taking all these in late November and voila! My December to January cycle was reduced to 5 weeks! My Jan to Feb cycle was right on the money- at 4 weeks! I am ecstatic! And I really feel that I ovulated. Moreover, I did not have my usual migraine and I have so much more energy now. There is no need for me to take an afternoon nap like I used to.

THere is just one catch though, there seems to be no way around exercise. I average about 1 1/2 hours five to six days a week. I alternate weight training and cardio workout. I know, it seems like there are other things you would much rather do with your time than staying in the gym. BUt think of it this way, exersicing leaves you with more energy to do more things with a more positive attitude!

My next goal now is to lose the weight around the middle. I have been working out for over a year already, although I have put on muscles, I have not been losing weight. I stand 5'6" and weighs 151 lbs., it would be great if I could lose the ten lbs. around the waist. However, I try not to complain as others are in a lot worse situation.

I hope this helps. Feel free to write me.

good luck!
